Bucs come alive in second half and win 16-3 over Jets

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 13 August 2006 at 9:08 am

Friday night’s game against the Jets was a tale of two halves.  The first half was a defensive struggle as the game was tied 3-3 at the half.  Then the Bucs brought in rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski and dominated the Jets in the second half.  Gradkowski engineered two TD drives, and completed 11 of 13 passes for 104 yards and 2 TDs.  The Bucs also rushed the ball 44 times for 167 yards.  The Bucs held the ball for 36:06 of the game.

Tim Massaquoi (7, TE)

Massaquoi is a good pass catcher that might move to H Back in the pros.  He gives a good effort blocking in the running game.  When he catches a ball (most of them are over the middle), he quickly turns up field and protects the ball.  He’s got a shot to make the team.

Charles Bennett (7, DE)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 9:29 am

Bennett was a nice pick in the 7th round with upside.  He is a good pass rusher with the speed to close (4.8 40), but he lacks the bulk (250 pounds) to stand up to the running game.  Coaching could help him improve.

Justin Phinisee (7, CB)

Phinisee wasn’t expected to be drafted.  He has good speed and is tough.  He will probably have to make his mark on special teams to make the roster.

T.J. Williams (6, TE)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 9:23 am

Williams was another good pick for Coach Gruden, as he was supposed to be gone by the 4th round.  Williams has good size and speed and has the quickness to stretch the field a bit.  He would rather run over you than around you.  He gives a good effort in blocking for the running game even though he lacks elite power.

Williams played in 47 games at NC State (32 starts) and caught 98 passes for 1,283 yards (13.1 avg) and 5 TDs.

Bruce Gradkowski (6, QB)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 9:18 am

Gradkowski is a good QB when playing the short game.  He’s very accurate on his short passes, but his long ones tend to float a little as he has to wind-up to throw them.  He has nice size at 6’1″, 220 and he’s fast 4.7 40.  Spends countless hours in the film room studying the opponent so that nothing baffles him on gameday.

Gradkowski played in 49 games at Toledo (36 starts) and completed 68.2% of his passes for 9,225 yards with 85 TDs and 27 interceptions.

Julius Jenkins (5, DE)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 9:13 am

Coach Gruden found a good one here.  Jenkins was supposed to be gone by the third round and the Bucs got him in the fifth.  Jenkins is a huge end (6’3″,270) that could add more bulk to his frame.  He also is very fast for his size (4.8 40).  Jenkins is the rare defensive end that is better defending the run than the pass.

Jenkins played in 42 games at Stanford (23 starts) and made 130 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, 16.5 sacks, forced three fumbles and recovered four fumbles.

Alan Zemaitis (4, CB)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 9:07 am

Zemaitis is a big corner (6’1″, 200) that lacks big speed (4.55 40).  Zemaitis has landed in the perfect place for him, as he is best in zone defense…and the Bucs are the masters of the Cover 2.  Zemaitis is a ballhawk that makes a ton of big plays and is never far from the action.  He needs help if trying to cover man to man at the pro level, because of his lack of top end speed.

Zemaitis played in 48 games at Penn State (33 starts) and made 181 tackles, broke up 34 passes, intercepted 12 passes, forced three fumbles and recovered two fumbles.

Maurice Stovall (3, WR)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 8:49 am

Stovall has good size (6’4″, 220) and is a football-fast player.  He is very quick in and out of his cuts and plays much faster than he times.  Coach Weis brought out the best in him at Notre Dame as he seemed to be coasting his first three years in college.  Coach Gruden is a tough guy and will keep the pressure on Stovall to play hard all the time.

Stovall played in 46 games at Notre Dame (23 starts) and caught 130 passes for 2,195 yards (16.9 avg) and 18 TDs.

Jeremy Trueblood (2, OT)

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by ravenhater on Saturday 12 August 2006 at 8:44 am

Trueblood is a massive mauler at 6’8″, 319 pounds.  When he gets his mitts on you, you are done.  He doesn’t have great speed, but he generally takes good angles when confronting speed rushers.  He’s a strong run-blocker that can whack someone on the second level.  He will be a starter for the Bucs at some point, maybe even starting this season.Â
